The 14 Best Derma Rollers of 2023

buuk.top / JHETT THOMPSON

Few treatments in the skincare world are lauded for delivering as many benefits as microneedling. As a quick reminder, microneedling is a procedure in which teeny-tiny needles are rolled across the skin, creating microscopic holes. This in turn triggers the body’s natural wound healing response to kick in, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.1The result? Fewer fine lines and wrinkles, firmer skin, a more even tone and texture, you name it.2(Microneedling is even used to treat stretch marks and acne scars and also has the added benefit of increasing the penetration and efficacy of any products you use afterward.)2

Rolling needles all over the skin, no matter how small, is intimidating, but youd be happy to know that the procedure is hardly painful when conducted at home; at-home derma rollers don’t penetrate the skin as deeply as those used by the professionals in an office setting by a dermatologist or aesthetician. The recovery time with at-home derma rollers is shorter, too, and theres something to be said about achieving healthier-looking skin directly from the couch.

Not all derma rollers are created equal, so we set out to determine which ones are worthy of a spot in our routines. We tried some of the top-rated products on the market, our testers using them for weeks at a time and rating how well each improved the texture and appearance of their skin. We then combined these results along with our own research to compile this list.

Ahead, find everything to know when shopping for an at-home derma roller, plus our picks for the best on the market.

BeautyBio GloPRO Facial Microneedling Tool Review

This is a favorite of the buuk.top team, not surprising given that it was created by the inventor and patent holder of microneedling technology. (File under why didn’t we think of that?) Rolling the 540 needles over your skin improves the absorption of topical products a whopping 200 times, but the benefits don’t stop there. It also delivers red LED light therapy, great for fighting inflammation and further helping with collagen production, plus a unique Vibrotactile Stimulation to up these effects even further.3You can even purchase separate tips for the body, eyes, and lips so that you can use this topnotch tool from head to toe.

What Our Testers Say

"It wasn’t until about three weeks in that I looked in the mirror and thought to myself, damn, my skin looks good. Any signs of dullness were long gone, and I looked noticeably radiant and fresh-faced, my skin’s texture smooth and even. I began waking up with the softest skin of my life—like, can’t-stop-touching-my-face soft." — Jenna Igneri, Product Tester

Understandably, you may not want to shell out big bucks on a tool you’ve never tried before and aren’t certain if you’ll like. It boasts 540 0.25-millimeter needles made from derm-recommended titanium, and it can be used on both the face and body. For less than the cost of lunch, your products will penetrate deeper into your skin, leaving you with a smooth, glowing complexion and body. Needless to say, were sold!

StackedSkincare Microneedling Tool 2.0 Review

This derma roller is U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act Certified, which should provide some ease to first-timers. While its beneficial and safe to use on all skin types, its especially great at targeting the appearance of fine lines to support younger-looking skin. In fact, in a consumer study conducted over 12 weeks, 72% of participants saw a decrease in visible lines when used as directed, and 82% saw an increase in skin plumpness. "This is my favorite derma roller," says Dr. Skotnicki. "It has very small 0.2-millimeter needles that are stainless steel, so its safe and effective. I have feedback from patients that this has helped keep their skin bright and even-toned."

Note: You may notice some slight tingle when using this derma roller, but thats just par for the course.

This is one of the best-selling derma rollers on Amazon, no easy feat. Reviewers rave about the results, particularly how well it helps address acne scarring and sun damage in addition to helping skincare products better penetrate. Dr. Skotnicki is also a fan, noting that the titanium 0.25-millimeter needles make it a great option. "Plus, it also comes with a case to protect it and its well-priced," she says. While it is super affordable, its worth noting that the needle head isnt replaceable, so once it wears down, youll need to purchase a whole new roller.

Microneedling isn’t just for your face. It can be a great option for combating scars, stretch marks, and even reducing the appearance of cellulite, not to mention generally improving the overall tone and texture of the skin below your chin.2What makes this particular option choice for this purpose is the double-sized head, which features an impressive 1,080 medical-grade stainless steel needles, allowing you to target larger areas on the body in less time. Itll also help your fancy body butters, lotions, and serums work better, which is a major plus.

Being diligent about cleaning and maintenance is paramount when it comes to derma rolling. That means cleaning the roller head after each use, but also replacing it. That can be a little annoying and start to get pricey, given that for many rollers you have to purchase extra or replacement heads separately.

That’s why we love that you get four total heads in this kit, giving you some serious bang for your buck. Each one contains 600 durable titanium needles, and there’s also a convenient storage case included. Did we mention that its also super affordable?

Looking to plump up your lips without a cosmetic procedure? Yep, microneedling can help you do just that. The caveat: You’ll want to use a derma roller and/or special head that’s specifically made for lips, like this one. The super-narrow size and ultra-fine needles are choice for targeting this sensitive area.

Just like you would with your face, make sure your lips are clean and exfoliated first, and use a serum (or, for even more plumping benefits, lip plumper) afterward. Well admit, it can be a little painful initially, but results can last up to two weeks, making it worth it.

If the idea of rolling needles across your face freaks you out, we get it. (It’s a weird concept and one that takes some time to get used to.) Consider trying this guy instead, which features non-invasive peaks rather than needles. They don’t pierce your skin—so no, you won’t get quite the same effects as you would with other derma rollers—but they still can help boost your glow and deliver somewhat of an exfoliating effect. Plus, it’s also a much safer option for those with super sensitive skin or those who are averse to needles.

Final Verdict

We love the classic BeautyBio GloPRO for its versatility, effectiveness, and red light technology. The updated StackedSkincare’s Microneedling Tool 2.0 is also a winner thanks to its well-rounded size, stainless steel needles, and comfortable handle. And for pure luxury and chic design, the Jenny Patinkin Rose on Rose Derma Roller (view at Blue Mercury) is the best multi-tasking option. With a stainless steel roller on one end and a rose quartz massage tool on the other, this roller is a one-and-done tool for a healthy, glowing, sculpted complexion.

Meet the Expert

Dr. Sandy Skotnicki is a board-certified dermatologist and allergy expert based in Toronto, Canada. She’s the author of "Beyond Soap: The Real Truth About What You Are Doing to Your Skin and How to Fix It for a Beautiful, Healthy Glow" and is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
Kerry Benjamin is an esthetician and founder of StackedSkincare, a line of skincare and skin tools such as derma rollers, dermaplaners, and high-frequency acne-fighting devices.

What to Look For in a Derma Roller

Needle Material

When it comes to choosing a derma roller, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Sandy Skotnicki suggests reaching for a tool made from either stainless steel or titanium. “Titanium is the best, as it is stronger and therefore will be more effective over time,” she says. Surgical steel is another great option.

Needle Length

It’s crucial to look into the needle length of a derma roller not only to ensure it’s effective enough for your specific skin concerns but also to make sure your skin can tolerate it. Generally, at-home models with a needle length between 0.2 millimeters and 1 millimeter are best for beginners; however, Dr. Skotnicki says 0.5-millimeter is best. “I think for at-home derma rolling, this length makes the procedure safer,” she says. Of course, it’s always best to speak with your own dermatologist, who can help determine the best length based on your individual needs.

Replaceable Heads

This depends on your preference, but for those who strive to make their beauty routine as eco-conscious as possible, opt for a product with a replaceable head. This way, you won’t need to discard or recycle the entire handle and roller once the needles become dull. Not to mention, itll help you save a few bucks along the way.

FAQ
How do you use a derma roller?

When using a derma roller, first split your face into four quadrants, addressing one section at a time. “Using mild pressure, roll the device back and forth horizontally, vertically, and diagonally over the areas of the skin you’re treating,” says Dr. Skotnicki. “Usually, I suggest two to four passes in each direction.” In terms of adding products into the mix, she says you can apply a serum either before or directly after using your derma roller. Be sure to always roll on a clean, dry face, and finish off with a hydrating or nourishing skincare product.

How do you clean a derma roller?

Dr. Skotnicki recommends washing your roller with warm water and then spraying it with a rubbing alcohol spray before its first use. She also suggests washing and disinfecting your roller after each treatment and again before you reuse it.

How often should you use a derma roller?

“Start by using it once a month, and then work your way up to weekly depending on your skin type or if you have an associated skin problem," Dr. Skotnicki says. Also important: "A derma roller shouldn’t be used on active rosacea, acne, eczema, cold sores, or sunburned or infected skin.”

Do derma rollers stimulate beard growth?

Some derma roller brands say that their tools can help stimulate beard growth—a claim that is based on evidence suggesting that microneedling can help promote hair growth on the scalp. However, although there is some anecdotal evidence that supports this claim, buuk.tops experts agree that the science supporting beard rollers as a means of generating facial hair growth, specifically, is still evolving.
